Specifications: This lot of 14 large Venetian Millefiori African Trade Beads is from the late 19th - early 20th century. The beads are mainly white glass (unusual for millefiori cane beads) with multi-colored designs in red, green, yellow, blue and black glass. They range in diameter from approximately 12mm to 15mm, and range in length from 9mm (shortest) to 23mm (longest). Because of the handmade process the diameter/length of each one varies.
Doug Deal Factoid - Dutch traders were the first Europeans to bring Venetian millefiori beads to West Africa in the late 1400's. The beads were held in high regard by several tribes and were often used as a form of currency. Millefiori beads of this era are still sought after by collectors worldwide.
