Doug Deals Factoid: The first 35mm camera was designed by Leica's Oscar Barnack, and was introduced/sold to the public in 1925. The Leica was an immediate success and was responsible for popularizing 35mm film photography. The name "Leica" debatably stands for Laboratory of Experimental Intensive Care and Anesthesiology (University of Amsterdam). Although other sources claim the name is derived from the first three letters of the founder's surname (Leitz) and the first two letters of the word camera: lei-ca.
