  • (43) Antique Venetian/Murano Millefiori Glass African Trade Beads Watermelons

This mixed lot of 43 Venetian Millefiori African Trade Beads is from the late 19th - early 20th century. They are strung on two strands of rafia cord. The beads are brightly multi-colored in the traditional mosaic "watermelon" pattern - red, white, blue and yellow with black glass centers. The largest elbow bead is approximately 2-1/4" inches (57mm) long. The rest of the beads range in length from 0.75 inches (19mm) to 2-inches (53mm). They are all approximately 1/2-inch (14mm) in diameter, although because of the handmade process the diameter of each one varies.

Doug Deal Factoid - Dutch traders were the first Europeans to bring Venetian millefiori beads to West Africa in the late 1400s. The beads were held in high regard by several tribes and were often used as a form of currency.
