- (50) Antique Venetian Millefiori/Murano Glass African Trade Beads - Mixed Large
Specifications: This mixed lot of 50 loose Venetian Millefiori African Trade Beads is from the late 19th - early 20th century. The beads are brightly multi-colored solid glass in various mosaic & geometric patterns with a few rare watermelons included. The beads range in length from 0.475" (12mm) to 1.65" (42.5mm), and in diameter from 0.45" (11mm) to 0.5" (14mm). However, because of the handmade process the size of each one varies as can be seen in the photos.
Doug Deal Factoid - Dutch traders were the first Europeans to bring Venetian millefiori beads to West Africa in the late 1400's. The beads were held in high regard by several tribes and were often used as a form of currency. Millefiori beads of this era are still sought after by collectors worldwide.
