(51) Antique Venetian Millefiori Glass African Trade Beads
There are 51 Antique Millefiori Glass African Trade Beads total in the traditional "watermelon" design, all strung on non-antique 32" raffia cord. The beads are brightly colored in lime green, yellow, white, blue, red, and black glass. All are from the late 19th - early 20th century, the beads are approximately 0.325"-0.425" (9-10mm) in diameter and just over 1/2-inch in length. However, because of their handmade process, the size of each one varies slightly.
Doug Deal Factoid - Dutch traders were the first Europeans to bring Venetian millefiori beads to West Africa in the late 1400s. The beads were held in high regard by several tribes and were often used as a form of currency.
