- (1) 54" Strand of Antique Venetian Glass Millefiori African Trade Beads
Specifications: This lot of 58 Millefiori African Trade Beads is from the late 19th - early 20th century. The beads are multi-colored glass in mosaic, watermelon and geometric bead patterns with mostly black centers. The largest elbow bead is approximately 2 inches (50mm) long, it has small chips on both ends. The rest of the beads range in length from 0.4 inches (10mm) to 1.5-inches (38mm). They are approximately 1/2-inch (13mm) in diameter, although because of the handmade process the diameter of each one varies, as can be seen in the photos.
Doug Deal Factoid - Dutch traders were the first Europeans to bring Venetian millefiori beads to West Africa in the late 1400s. The beads were held in high regard by several tribes and were often used as a form of currency.
